Can – May – Will – Shall – Must – To have to
Si je dis It’s raining, personne ne va douter de la véracité de ce que je constate. Par contre, l’utilisation d’un modal exprime une orientation subjective et permet de porter un jugement.
Exemple : It may/could rain Il se peut qu’il y ait de la pluie. It might be raining Il se peut qu’il soit en train de pleuvoir.

LES OPERATEURS MODAUX
Les opérateurs modaux sont : can, could, may, migh, must, should, will, would.
- Can/can't et could/couldn't
Ce qu'il exprime :
- la capacité - She can speak Portuguese ;
- la requête - Can we leave now ?
- la permission - You can park here ;
- l'éventualité - It could rain later on ;
- l'impossibilité - You can't use franc coins in the shops any longer.
- May/may not et might
Il exprime :
- la permission ou le refus de permission - No, you may not go ;
- l'éventualité - She may come tomorrow ;
- le preterit de may atténue le degré de certitude - She might be at home.
- Will/won't et would/wouldn't
Il exprime :
- la décision spontanée - Someone's at the door. I'll go ;
- le futur - There will be an election next month ;
- la vérité - Boys will be boys ;
- l'insistance - If you will smoke how can you expect to cure that cough ?
- le conditionnel - What would you do in my position ?
- la suggestion - Would you like a drink ?
- l'habitude dans le passé - Every evening they would go for a walk along the beach.
- Shall et should/shouldn't
Il exprime :
- la suggestion - Shall we eat out tonight ?
- le conseil - You shouldn't eat so much junk food.
- le reproche - You shouldn't have been so unfriendly.
- la forte probabilité - They should have arrived by now.
- Must
Il exprime :
- l'interdiction - Visitors to the zoo must not feed the animals.
- l'obligation - All applications must arrive by 30th June.
- la déduction - You've been up all night so you must be feeling tired.
